My Usual Writing Process

Most of the time my usual writing process looks like I need antidepressant medication. Even though I have to write a lot for work I still always dread it. Most of my writings are technical reports, not the most fun things to write about. My topics are all preordained and stifle any creativity at all. Since my audiences are very diverse, from highly skilled technical readers to sales associates, it is very hard to convey my message to such a wide audience with any degree of certainty. Usually this is the part that makes me a little crazy.

Usually though if I just sit down and write it somehow all comes together no matter how much I procrastinate and dread the inevitability that I have to get it done. Sometimes when I am done the questions that may arise show just how hard it was to convey a message to such a diverse audience. The layman don’t understand technical jargon and the techies don’t understand layman speak.

A few of my writing requirements are:

Overcoming Procrastination. That’s just it. I have to have certain things to get my writing done. I wait until the last minute when I am under the gun. Somehow this finally motivates me. Pressure and deadlines seem to work for me.
Noise. A radio is essential to my writing. I cannot stand a quiet room. Where I’m sure it distracts some, a little music mellows me out.
Wet Whistle. Something to drink is on my list. I know I am not giving a speech, but it seems as though when I write I get a dry mouth. It is funny how I've noticed that over the years.

Maybe one of these days I will become a better writer and get over some of my little quirks. Until then I still have to write often. Quirks or no quirks I go on until this old dog learns some new tricks!

  1. Jason,
Writing boring, technical reports does not seem like a very interesting activity to do! I understand why you might dread writing them. I am the same way in that even though I may procrastinate sometimes, everything comes together. I enjoyed your writing requirements. I have to have something to drink, too!

  2. I can't imagine how you can write something that satisfies such a varied audience! Nor can I imagine how you can write report after report with no fun writing involved. I think everyone has their own little writing quirks, since I too feel like procrastination motivates me.
