Engagement in Online Learning

How does one stay engaged in an online learning situation? That is definitely a tough one. There is no hands-on work in the classroom, no face to face time with a teacher, and no other student to meet in the library and study with. Sounds like it could even be harder than a regular, on-campus class. Maybe it’s not and maybe the basics are all the same.

What are the basics to good learning? These tips below are adapted from a Cengage Learning article dated January 11th, 2013.

  • Attend Class Regularly
  • Come Prepared
  • Limit Distractions
  • Participate and Ask Questions
  • Take Notes

Attend Class Regularly-     In an online course that means making time for class. Most people taking an online course are because they don’t have time to attend a regular campus. It doesn’t mean that you won’t still have to put in some hours. Log on and work often!

Come Prepared-     You will have look at the syllabus and figure out the reading and assignments all by your lonesome. Do not wait until the last minute every time. Have a place to sit down and do your work that is comfortable and tidy.

Limit Distractions-     Enough stuff can distract you from learning in a regular class. Now add doorbells, phones ringing, dog barking, and kids screaming. Find a place where you can tune this out and gets some real work done!

Participate-     Take time to complete all readings and assignments. Also do not forget to interact with the other students through the blogs. If you are having troubles ask questions. Just because the teacher isn’t right in front of you doesn’t mean that they do not have multiple mediums for you to get your answers.

Take Notes-     I know in most cases notes are not graded and you can go back to the material at any time on the website, but note taking is an integral part of learning. Your brain can pick up a lot just from you writing it down.

Online learning can be fun if you just stay engaged in the process and put forth a little effort!

This is Me
Hi! My name is Jason Ledure. My hometown is Cape Girardeau, MO. I have lived here all of my life except for a brief two year period in the late 70’s. I am married and have three kids. I also am employed full time at a local business. My major is Business Administration. I am going back to school to get my BSBA after a little over twenty years out of school. My company has mentioned to me that future opportunities may open up once completed. I couldn’t turn them down. It will be a challenge, but it will make me a better person.
My goals for this class are simple, help further my English skills. Not only do I need it as a requirement for my major, I also do a lot of writing for my job. I want to make sure that I am doing a professional job when writing for my business. I know that there are some things I can brush up on and maybe some things I don’t even know. I did not like English in High School so I flat-out paid no attention during class. That is coming back to haunt me now! I will have to give this class a lot of effort if I want to do well. Of that I am sure.
